RE: Isuzu Joyner

We have a joyner buggie at the cabin, I hope they did something different for the utilities because the buggie engine has no torque at low rpms. Build quality is pretty good, except for a few loose bolts. Commom problem I'm finding with chinese made stuff.

RE: New models

Arctic Cat annouced it's 550 EFI machine a while back. It's a AC built engine too. Also A Prowler 1000 and a 700 mudpro model with factory snorkels and 28 inch tires.

RE: used ATV advice

Susan are you willing to dig in and fix things? I don't think that's a lot of miles on a well maintained engine but I'm worried about other thinks. Bearings, bushings, belt, brakes. Stuff that doesn't require a degree in ATV repair just someone with some mechanical skill or willingness to learn. With an ATV the miles really depend on the type of riding. An ATV can be worn out in less than a 1000 miles but I also have heard of some machines with 10K or more.

RE: Thinking of getting a 4x4

I think a lift will help, most plow setups use up a lot of our ground clearance. What kind of plow are you getting? The polaris glacier plow is nice ($$$) but I know it hooks somehow onto the front of the ATV so a lift could be a problem. A moose plow system won't have any problem with a 3" lift.

RE: Arctic Cat 366.

Ease up on the nacho. Easy mistake to make since cat has stopped it's partnership with Suzuki for 09. I believe but can't confirm that AC designed 366. Cat did build a engine plant in St. Cloud, MN. Thier they make most of the engines in AC's ATV/UTV's. Cat is outsourcing the smaller displacement machines to Kymco. The new 550H1 EFI, 650h1, 700h1 EFI and 950v2 are built by Artic cat in the USA. 123Kawi your intitled to your opinion but I think cat's are very well built and strong. Example: Went riding with 25 quads this spring in very harse conditions. All 20 Cats worked flawlessly, one 750 brute broke an axle and a grizzly had problems also. I don't want to into one's better than another, my experience just doesn't support the idea of Cat's being inferior in any way. FWIW: We have a Cat and yamaha Atv in the garage.

RE: farm ATV

Snich if your still following this thread. I wouldn't worry about the diff lock. I doubt very much you need it and it makes steering difficult. If you do end up with traction issues, upgrade the tires. Aftermarket tires can make a big difference. Lot of great machines out there. Check your local dealers and sit on a few machines even ride some if they let you. Most ATV salesmen are clueless and full of BS so ignore them and don't buy until you have looked at 3 machines. My only personal experience in the 400 class is on a Yamaha 450 and a Arctic cat 400. The Yamaha is very nice and a good size weight for smaller riders. The 400 Cat (suzuki engine) has better ground cleareance and is more capable in the nasty stuff. The 07 Cats have great racks with the MRP system. 08's have the MRP but the racks are smaller. Let us know what you get.

RE: Winch question

Take the winch off, it has 4 bolts on the bottom and the wiring nuts. Take the hook off too to get it through the fairlead. Now unscrew the bolts holding the two halves of the winch together. The ones that go into the long rods that your cable is binded up into. Hope that makes sense. Remove the cable and clean you winch up. Lots of dust and dirt get's in there. Now go buy a synthetic cable (ebay $40-50) Big improvement over steel. Lighter, safer and doesn't cut up your hands. Stronger too!

RE: Arctic Cat 366.

I love my cat. The only thing I don't like that they have done is gone to smaller racks in 08. Can be fixed by ordering the parts for a 07 but still after spending good money why should I have to spend another $350 to get racks I want. From what I hear the 700H1 has a very noticable increase in power over the 700 (Suzuki engine) Cats are big, strong workhorses. May not win a lot of drag races, but they will out work, out pull and go were the other can't. They just annouced a 950cc prowler for 09 and a 700H1 mudpro. (factory snorkels, mud tires and extra GC)

RE: Arctic Cat 366.

That is way too high. That must be full MSRP. Local dealer here has one on ebay for $4340. That seems about right to me.

RE: Arctic Cat 366.

Grey Griz have you compared cost? Not msrp but OTD price. I'm curious what you can get a 366 for? I would guess it is much less than a rancher.

RE: Arctic Cat 366.

GreyGriz, The AC 366 has a low range and if you feel you must have a locker you can swap one in. The Locking front diff from other cat models does bolt up.

RE: Arctic Cat 366.

I have hear good things from a 366 rider. The only complaint he had was it lacked a front diff locker. The 366 is made for AC buy Kymco. Don't know you makes the engine. The 400, 500 and 700 are suzuki engines. The 700H1 and 950v2 are Cat built. The rumors from AC rider circles is that cat will build it's own 500class engine and not outsource engines from Suzuki in 2009.

RE: Arctic Cat 400 utility 4X4

The AC 400 and 500 are both Suzuki engines. The 500 is liquid cooled the 400 is not. I believe the 400 has high gear for reverse. So if you tow maybe not the best choice it you want to back up a trailer. Or not the best for mudding and big tires. The 500 would be the way to go since it's only a little more money. The only difference beteween the 400 & 500 is the engine. Don't let anyone talk you out of the AC. The racks and ground clearance is the best in the industry. The 450 yamaha feels like a kids atv after sitting on a Cat. The cat is quite a bit bigger machine.

GreyGriz A working terrapro in good condition with some attachments brings good money on ebay.

RE: Question

Stumper, "Turf mode" would be easier on the tires and better for handling if you ride your ATV on the street. (Legal in SD) The polaris website doesn't say how the diff works and I can't find any details anywhere else.
ATVlessinMN 03/31/08 08:19pm Utility/4x4
RE: Question

I think that polaris put it on the ATP model in the past and now on the x2 and 2 rider touring models plus the ranger. I assume in "turf mode" it unlocks the diff and it works just like the one in your car. (open) Allowing the wheels to spin at different speeds. This way you don't tear up the "turf". Artic cat is putting a detroit locker in some of the prowler models now. It allows one wheel to spin faster, so it helps turning and turf but doen't allow a wheel to spin slower than the drive gear so you never get stuck in the muck with just one wheel spinning like you do with a open dif.

RE: choosing atv for work and ice fishing

I checked them out online. I was wrong, they have a x2 700 and a touring 800. Learn something everyday. Let us know what you get, and pics are always good.

RE: choosing atv for work and ice fishing

I think the 500 would be enough, but you said in your first post that you want to tow a trailer full of stones. The 800 will pull a few more stones, it's a good jump in power. (I think they are 800's, not 700 but I haven't been to a polaris dealer) If the price difference isn't great go big, but the 500 in low pulls pretty well too. We use a sportsman 500 to pull a trailer full of goose hunting gear and 5 guys out to the field. Only when the ground is soft does it struggle, the belt got hot last time out. The 5 guys weigh 1200lbs plus decoys on a two place snowmobile trailer. My point is you can tow/haul a pretty good load.

RE: choosing atv for work and ice fishing

Ksims, they are all 4x4 but applying torque to the all the wheels all the time or the right time that's a different story. A long story! I think Fisherless was thinking in terms of 4x2 and 4x4 and not the types of 4x4 systems. I like the sportsmans x2, good choice. I especially like the "turf" mode setting on the x2. It would be nice not to rip up the lawn when doing some yard work. Wish more Manufacturers would make this available.
